Book Rental Scheme

In September 2015, St. Nessan’s National School introduced a new Book Rental Scheme which is now in operation throughout the school.

What is a Book Rental Scheme?

Book Rental Schemes loan textbooks to pupils and charge an annual Rental Fee. The books are owned by the Board of Management of the school and are rented out each year. Many schools run Book Rental Schemes. The cost of renting the books from the school is much lower than buying the books in a bookshop.

How does our Book Rental Scheme operate?

In Term Three (Easter to Summer), you will be asked to pay the Rental Fee to the school, and to accept a contract to state that you will look after the books and return them in good condition at the end of the year. If you are new to the Scheme, you will also be asked to pay a once off €15 deposit, which will be refunded to you when your child leaves the school, subject to the conditions of the Book Rental Scheme. The Book Rental Scheme may not cover all books. Workbooks are not included in the Book Rental Scheme. The school will let you know what workbooks you may need to buy in June. Please see our Book Rental Policy for details of fees.

When your child comes back to school in September, the class teacher will give him/her the textbooks covered by the Scheme. Your child will use the textbooks for the school year. It is important that your child looks after the books carefully because they belong to the school. At the end of the school year, your child returns the borrowed textbooks to the school in good condition.

What are the benefits of a Book Rental Scheme?

Buying textbooks is a very heavy cost for parents/guardians. Using a Book Rental Scheme is one way of reducing this cost. A Book Rental Scheme also means that when textbooks are updated or changed, there is no extra expense incurred by parents/guardians, as the Scheme provides these new books for the pupils. The pupils may also benefit through the use of extra supplementary texts purchased for use in the Book Rental Scheme. These might include shared reading books, novels or extra texts in the different curricular areas, again without parents having to incur any extra expense.
